Metallic epoxy floor installation is a decorative coating system where fine metallic pigments are suspended inside a clear or tinted epoxy resin. Once the resin is poured, those pigments start to move. They rise, drift and separate as the epoxy levels and cures, and that movement is what creates the swirled, marbled, three dimensional look the system is known for.

The result reads like polished stone or poured marble, but with depth to it. Light travels into the finish and reflects back off the pigment layers underneath, so the floor shifts as you walk across it or as the sun moves through the room. How Durable Is a Metallic Epoxy Floor?

A metallic system from us finishes at 24 to 40+ mils of coating thickness, compared to the 3 to 5 mils you get from a hardware store kit.

Expect 10 to 15 years

A professionally installed metallic floor typically runs that long, and often longer in residential spaces with lighter traffic. Commercial floors sit at the shorter end simply because of volume.

Preparation decides the number, not the pigment

A metallic floor over an unground, untested slab fails early no matter how good it looks on day one. What is underneath outlasts what is on top.

Sunlight is what causes yellowing

Raw epoxy resin ambers when it takes direct UV, and it is the most common complaint about badly installed metallic floors. It is also entirely preventable.

The topcoat is what prevents it

We finish every metallic install with a UV stable polyaspartic or polyurethane layer that absorbs the sun exposure instead of the epoxy. With south facing glass or a door open often, it is not optional.

Day to day cleaning is minimal

Dust mop or soft broom regularly to lift grit, then damp mop with a pH neutral cleaner as needed. That is genuinely the whole routine.

Deal with spills and heavy items

Wipe up oil, brake fluid and de-icing salt rather than leaving them to sit, and keep pads under anything heavy. Both take seconds and protect the finish for years.

Do metallic floors scratch easily?

They resist scratching well at 24 to 40+ mils, but a high gloss reflective surface shows fine marks more readily than a textured flake floor does. Grit dragged underfoot is the usual cause. Regular dust mopping and pads under anything heavy make a visible difference over the years.

Is metallic epoxy slippery?

Metallic is the smoothest of our three systems, so it is moderately slippery when wet, much like polished concrete or tile. A non slip additive can be worked into the topcoat without changing the look much. If grip is a real priority in the space, quartz epoxy is the better system to be looking at.

Can you copy a metallic floor I found online?

We can match the colour palette, the style and roughly how much veining you want. We cannot reproduce a specific pattern, because the pigment moves on its own as the resin cures. Nobody can, including whoever installed the floor in that photo. Bring the reference and we will build a sample board towards it.

How do I clean a metallic epoxy floor?

Dust mop or soft broom regularly to lift grit, then damp mop with a pH neutral cleaner as needed. Avoid vinegar, citrus and other acidic cleaners, which dull the topcoat, and skip steel wool and abrasive pads. Wipe up oil, brake fluid and de-icing salt rather than leaving them to sit.

Can metallic go over my existing coated floor?

Sometimes, but metallic is the least forgiving system for it. The finish shows every dip, wave and patch underneath, so a coating that is lifting, contaminated or of unknown origin has to come off first. We assess what is on your slab at the free inspection before recommending either route.

Is metallic sensible for a garage I actually work in?

It can be, with one honest caveat. Metallic handles jack stands, dropped tools and vehicle traffic as well as our other systems do. The smooth reflective surface just makes every mark easier to see. If the garage is a workshop first and a showpiece second, flake usually keeps people happier.

Can metallic epoxy be installed outdoors?

We do not recommend it for driveways, exposed patios or anything taking direct weather and freeze and thaw cycles all year. For a covered porch or entrance, a flake system with a UV stable topcoat is the more sensible specification and gives you grip you would want there anyway.
